Opening films in films

I have procrastinated this blog and now it's Saturday afternoon. This blog is about the opening scenes in a film and what makes up an opening film.

The Key elements of film openings

  • Establish setting
Usually establishing setting by giving the audience an insight into where the film is set and what the plot of the story is about.
  • Mise-en-Scene
Everything captured on the screen.
  • Character/ Character placement
The relationships between the people and the film. It also helps the mise-en-scene.
  • Representation of genre
You will have to establish genre or give some sense of a the genre by using some genre conventions.
  • Cinematography
The visual aspect of the films opening is very important. if The cinematography is bad it can make the film look low budget or cheap.
    Some good openings are:
  • Enter  the villain- intro to the villain usually use with action films
  • Enter  the hero- intro to the hero with a 10 minute chase scene to capture attention
  • Establish relationships- things usually chance to fill in our associate with dramas.
  • Flip genre- what was she lightens the mood but then remind you of what the plot is.
  • teaser- an opening moment, scene, or sequence intended to hook the audience
  • theme-used to set up stories theme
For 3 different genres I have to compare and contrast the conventions of them. I have to compare and contrast using visual elements, auditory elements, character development, plot introduction, and representation. The three different genres that I'm going to do are horror, action, and

Action Film Openings
Action films really depends on what film you are seeing, some could be during the day and some could be during the night. action films usually start off with a enter the hero type of opening. action opening introduces the protagonist in a way that communicates their main skills, qualities, corks, and weaknesses efficiently and visually. If the scene goes straight into the action then it will most likely have a fast paced soundtrack. they would usually give a good representation of what the plot is going to be like.

Horror Film Openings
Horror openings could also have different types if openings for this genre. Some horror plot driven stories will open with the villain and the hero. Different horror openings would start off with a flip genre with the villain. The lighting would be darker and have a lot of dark areas or potentially fog. The films pallet could consist of the colors such as black, grey, red, brown, and a lot more darker colors .The opening would usually have a suspenseful soundtrack to keep you on the edge of the seat. The typical weapons in the film: knives, axes, chainsaws, and any sharp tool as well as supernatural settings such as forests, graveyards, haunted small towns, isolated towns, haunted houses, and any where someone could be alone. The type of shots that a horror film would typically have is extreme close ups in order to show the characters emotion and they could also use long shots to show the characters isolation. Horror films use strange camera angles to create unsettling, suspenseful feelings .

Romantic
Romantic openings usually start off showing the girl by herself or the girl in the boy meeting. The girl goes to a new town and meet some guy like working and they get off on the wrong foot. do usually have a lot of talking and lots of music in the film and out of the film. in romcoms you can always know what the plan is going to be about. for representation there’s an obvious one because almost every single romance film is the same.
