Genre Research

  Genre
This week we got a project, that is this blog. Which is supposed to be about types of movies and movie genres. We have been talking about types of movies and genres for like the past three to four weeks now If I'm correct. So what even is genre anyway? Genre comes from a French word that means kind or type. A genre is a type of over all theme of a movie or book. For an example genres can be comedy, fantasy, horror, science fiction, action and many more. It sounds pretty easy but its not as simple as it seems, films can have many different types of genres inside of it. These are called subgenre are particularly refers to the different types of genre within a genre.( Ex: Romcom and funny thriller) We have learned a lot about different genres and what makes them the genres they are here are some examples

Gangster Genre
The Gangster Genres typically have
  • The action of gangs, mobs, and underground figures.
  • Gangsters, crime, and the nefarious deeds of them.
Gang movies usually leave people interested and makes people want to do crime.
Romantic Comedy's
The romantic comedy genre also known as romcoms typically have
  • Color scheme is almost always red/pink
  • These films are light hearted and have a comic tension is a central love connection.
  • Love will always prevail/ No matter the obstacle love will win
These films usually start with a girl in a town and meets a man but they get off on the wrong foot. Leave and then they would find out they liked each other. Then find their way back to each other and live happily ever after.
Sci-Fi
The Sci-fi Genre typically has
  • Technology advancements in society
  • Dystopian lands
  • Set in different worlds
  • Supernatural beings
Sci-fi films have a specific look to them, they almost always in a futuristic setting with advanced technology. They could also take place outer space.
Crime
The conventions of the crime genre are
  • A crime that's mostly likely murder
  • High and low angle shots
  • A lot of close up shots
  • Morally upright
  • Justice must be prevailed
Stars a villain that is ugly physically and metaphorically. This films will allow you get the ability to process emotions without having to go through it.
Comedy( heheha)
Comedy's are my second favorite genre, this is what is in comedy films
  • Uses vulgar jokes and language to make people laugh
Comedy's were created to be humorous and to give laughter for you and me.
Horror
I would say I like a lot of things in horror films
  • Suspenseful soundtrack
  • A desire for justice
  • Antagonist has a problem with protagonist
  • A lot of clueless people and I mean a lot
  • Opens with an action scene where it introduces the villain and/or the hero
  • Villain typically wears a mask
Horror is a spooky theme. Placed in a normal town a villain will start to attack people then the MC will step in and will become the villains next target. They almost always have a basic witty teenage girl that falls while being in danger and ends up being killed. I find some horrors more funny then scary but there's a certain point were you know from just the title its scary. I don't watch a lot about horror films the only one I fully watched was "IT Chapter 2" but, besides that horror isn't my cup of tea. The audience that would like this type of film would be
Action
Last but not least, my favorite genre action.
Action is my favorite genre because
  • Have a "Good guy" fighting the "bad guy"
  • High energy big-budget scenes
  • Non stop motions, fights, battles and destruction
  • Lots of explosions, special effects and CGI
In action films the antagonist typically has goons that the protagonist fights, leading up to the final fight between the protagonist and antagonist. These films can be set within adventure films, pirate films, and mostly superhero films.

    Application
Speaking of Action films I actually just did a group project on it.
Here are some pictures.
Me and my group did a lot of research on the genre action and made this Power point presentation. First we started with our research and that took about three days to get all of it. Then we had to put it all on the Power point and this took like a day and a half. It goes into depth about the genre action. Like the definition, analysis of it, the themes you would see, the techniques, the history, the history of it, and even compares the new ones from the old ones. I did the definition and I think I did a great job at it.

Reflection
I learned that there is a difference between so many different genres. I think that it's really cool that their even is so many genres. I didn't know how much detail and how much work writers did to get the genre that they wanted to present to their viewers.
