Cinematography

     The meaning for Cinematography

This week I got a project that needs to be on Cinematography that is this blog for today. So lets start off with the basics well not really so basic. What is cinematography you might ask? Cinematography is responsible for the technical aspects of the images, basically all of the camera angles and movements. Lighting, lens choices, composition, exposure, filtrations, and camera filters.

Background

Cinematography is made up from many different elements of movements and many different camera angles. Lets start of with the many different unique camera angles. Then the camera movements and lastly the shot types. All of these are what makes a scene a scene because without any of the ones I just listed you wouldn't be able to make a movie in the first place.

Shot Types

  • Overshot

An overshot is used when the Camera directly above the the action looking down.

  • High shot

Camera is above the subject looking down at an angle to make the subject look smaller.

  • Under shot

Camera is placed under the subject looking straight up.

  • Point of view shot (POV)

Used to show from the subjects perspective.

  • Low angle shot

The camera would be low to the ground while pointing at an angle to do the opposite of a high angle shot, to make the subject look bigger.

Camera Movements

  • Tracking

When the camera tracks the subject through a scene.

  • panning
When the camera is mounted on a tripod and moves Horizontally which simulates head movement.
  • Dolling
This one is important its when any sort of moving moving platform that the camera is mounted on. Physically attached to moving abject and is really smooth.
  • The zoom
Is a lens movement that changes the amount of space a subject takes.
  • Hand held camera
Someone is holding the camera to make you feel like your there self explanatory.
  • Dolly-In Is when the camera moves slowly toward the subject. (And many more just can't list them all because the list would go on forever)
Although all of these camera movements are important what's more important is the shot types.
There are many different shot types so I will only go over a few of them. Extreme long shot is a shot that is used to show the subject from the distance which connects the subject to the setting. Full shot fits the frame from top to bottom with the character to establish the characters movement. Medium shots show the shot framing a subject from the waist up. Close up Fills about 3/4 of the frame. Shows the subjects face with a heavy emotion.

Application
To show all the camera angles and shot types
I knew. I was given the assignment to take pictures and find videos of the angles needed. I went all around my class room and hallway to take different angles. This process took almost an hour and 10 minutes to do.

Refection
I learned how important each individual shot and angle is. Every angle in a movie is made a way for a reason and every angle has a different meaning
